Federal Agency Policies & Resources

On August 25, 2022, the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy (OSTP) issued a memorandum on Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research that will make federally funded research, including publication and data, immediately available for the public to freely access and fully use. All federal agencies are required to update or develop their public access policies and ensure they take effect no later than December 31, 2025. We will continue to add updated public access policies from federal agencies as they are released.

  • National Institutes of Health (NIH): On December 17, 2024, NIH issued its updated Public Access Policy. The 2024 Public Access Policy is effective for manuscripts accepted for publication on or after December 31, 2025.
  • National Endowment for The Humanities (NEH): NEH released its public access policy that will go into effect on October 1, 2025.
  • Department of Energy (DOE): DOE released the updated policy in October 2024. The scientific data requirements in the DOE Order will take effect on October 1, 2025.
